AFC Meeting 02/23/02
Unit 4:  Love and God's Invitation.
The south half of the house had fire showing in each window.  Thick, black smoke pressured out of the front door.  Clay advanced the attack hose towards the entrance, but as the hose filled with water, it kinked into several pretzel looking loops.  Leaning down to untangle the mess, his portable radio microphone sprang loose from his jacket and fell downward until it found itself under Clay's boots every few steps.
"Aggh!  This is taking too long!  We've got to get in there." he thought, frustrated.
Though it felt like an eternity had passed, he had actually rectified the situation in a matter of seconds.  They moved the hose forward a few steps and the entire house lit up in flames explosively.  Flashover!  It could have been disasterous if they had entered the house and then  it flashed.
They fought their way inside, searching for victims while on their hands and knees, and extinguished the fire as they went.  Clay worked quickly, but efficiently, having to wipe the steam off of his mask frequently.  Visibility began to improve when he spotted the form of a body on a pile of laundry.  Adrenaline filled his stomach as he crouched to put his face inches from the other, straining to see life.
"Ha!  It's a doggone mannequin head!" Clay laughed, relieved.  Then he picked it up and tossed it out of his way so he could continue his search.  It took a lucky bounce and launched out through the front door.  He could briefly see the head, still smoldering, trailing across the front yard.
"Oops!  That's gonna look great on the news!" he grimaced.
God's timing is perfect.  He needs no second chances to get it right.  We find that He reveals Himself to us through our everyday experiences.  This is our goal:  by experiencing God, we come to know God.  If we know God as a real, personal God, we can show Him our love by obeying His commands.  "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.  He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." (John 14: 21)
Our only prerequisite is that we have an intimate love relationship with God.  Then God will take the initiative to show us where He is already working in people's lives.  We should pray that He reveals Himself in this way.  Then we can watch, wait, and be ready to respond with a sensitive, caring heart.  When someone inquires about spiritual matters, this is a sign God is working.  This is where we can join in with Him by asking them questions to reveal what God is doing in their life.  We listen, and then prepare to adjust our lives in an obedient response of commitment to being involved in the miracle of God's work.  To God be the glory.
