Clay Ennis Hand was upstairs showering after a hard work out. A new believer only six months prior, he was now assigned to the oldest fire house in town. As the heavy spray ran over him he chuckled to himself, humoring the irony of the situation as he mentally recited this week's memory verse from the Firefighters for Christ Bible study. "He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3: 5b) He let the peace of his newly acclaimed salvation fill him with thankfulness. The tones went off, opening his eyes to the stinging soap; he felt his heart beat quicken with anxiety.
"Lucky, I guess", he thought as he threw on his shorts.
Running to the pole hole, he launched, and let gravity take over.
"Squeak! Squeeeeak! Squeak!", the pole laughed and mocked him as it reached out and grabbed wet skin when it could, burning the flesh.
"Yeow!", was all Clay could muster in response. As he jumped on the truck, he thought, "I guess Jesus was right: just because He has already cleansed me, I can expect some bumps and bruises along the way from the opposition of the world. Time to get tough I guess. Main thing is He saved me; He died for me. At least I'm clean now!"
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15: 5). This verse lays the groundwork for us to understand how to experience God working in our lives. The essential ingredient is our personal relationship with Christ. We can not expect to succeed in knowing God's will if we neglect this top priority.
How do we apply this principle? By following Jesus one day at a time we can see firsthand His promise for us to "bear fruit" on a daily basis. This is very exciting when you consider it as a personal promise and a personal invitation to participate in doing God's will. This brings peace into our lives, where we are no longer enemies of God, but instead, are daily submitting to His desire for us to become more like Him.
We should come to realize that God is actually working around us all of the time. He may not show Himself in a burning bush or project His voice from the clouds, but know that His greatest desire is for His creation to come closer to Him. So we can search with confidence and expect to find Him working. How does God want us to respond? We simply surrender our will and join Him where He is working. He then works through us to further fulfill His purposes according to His will.
How can we, as ordinary people, serve the living God? Through prayer, Bible study, and life experiences He will mold us into a more Christlike creation. Furthermore, the newly molded creation must stay in the creator's hand in order to be used effectively. Just as the potter molds a clay cup, the cup is without purpose away from the potter's hand. It is crystal clear that we are expected to rid ourselves of any selfish ambitions to serve God.
We can know that God can do anything He wants through us and He should receive all the credit for the results. As we experience God working through us, a definite change will take place. When we accept His calling to be His servants, it is impossible for us to remain our old selves. His daily invitation for us to surrender to doing His will, inititiates an awesome transformation from the hand of God Himself. This new creation is but a glimpse of our heavenly bodies He prepares ahead of us. Believe it. To God be the glory.
