AFC Meeting 1/26/02
The Amarillo Firefighters for Christ wish to extend many thanks for the prayers and support we received while we were in New York City.   As their were twenty seven of us spread out over five days in the city, there are numerous stories and experiences by members of our team.  Unified in purpose, we split into groups of 3-4 to either visit fire stations or work 8 hour shifts at the chapel set up for rescue workers to take breaks.  At the stations it was common among us to be received very hospitably by the firemen.  Also well known was the fact that we were but a continuation of a steady string of visitors showing their support since 9/11, thus a part of the consistent representation of the love of Christ that holds no geographical boundaries.  This support will be remembered as they attempt to move on with their lives and further the healing process.
At Ground Zero, we found a different atmosphere where workers from many entities came to eat, drink, and relax while on their 12 hour shift.  Everyone from fire, police, ironworkers, construction, heavy machinery operators, park service, to engineers shared this building at the same time.  In groups of 4-6 we took the positions as servants in getting them refills or foods as they needed it.  Furthermore, we struck up conversations individually and learned of their personal attachment to the scene.  From there we were able to tell them where we were from, who we represented, and share in their suffering, sometimes leading to intimate prayer to God to meet their needs.
These workers are still hurting as they work 12 hours up to seven days a week.  Their families are suffering also.  Their fatigue can be seen in their eyes as they push relentlessly to finish the task at hand.  They still need our prayers and support, and will definitely need them when the clean up and recovery are finished.
The love of Christ was shared in New York City that week.  Random lives were touched as a result of our focus and single-minded purpose.  In our travels, people were talked to, ministered to, and  prayed with in subways, restaurants, businesses, and on the street.  We thank everyone again for helping make it possible for a small group to represent Amarillo and share Christ's love with the people of New York.   The Firefighters for Christ will be forever grateful and forever changed by the personal impact of this trip.

Next week:  we start the "Experiencing God" workbook in our group study.
